Casa Comalat: another Modernista jewel hidden in the heart of Barcelona's Diagonal
No one who visits Barcelona fails to notice Casa Batlló, a well-known and recognisable building designed by Antonio Gaudí on Passeig de Gràcia. However, not far from there, at number 442 Diagonal, hides the Casa Comalat, a late modernista creation (1909-1911) by the architect Salvador Valeri i Pupurull. In fact, the fascinating stone main façade, with its wrought-iron portico, upper gallery and curved balconies with very Gaudiesque flowers, is visible to everyone, although it is nowhere near as much in the limelight as the famous Batlló or Casa Amatller. The peculiarity of this building, and why it is worth a visit, is its double façade. The back façade, which faces Carrer Rosselló, surprises with its colourful polychrome ceramic base, a unique design that draws praise from experts and passers-by alike. Be sure to visit it!
